This innovative initiative created by Taste of Tech and the African American Automotive Association (AAAA), with the first edition held in collaboration with Sketch Battle Jr., allowed middle and high school students from Detroit’s University Prep Art & Design School to embark on an exciting journey in automotive design. This one-of-a-kind program, held at the College for Creative Studies (CCS), was specifically created to provide young talent with hands-on experience in transforming two iconic vehicles—a 2018 Dodge Demon built by 5 O’Clock Garage and a 1993 Toyota Supra from the AAAA—into custom art cars.
The event brought together 16 students, divided into two teams, each tasked with designing car wraps that reflect their individual artistic styles. Supported by professional designers from Stellantis and Ford, the students were not only introduced to the fundamental aspects of automotive design but also encouraged to think outside the box, translating their creative visions onto iconic vehicles.
The result of their efforts will be unveiled at the iconic 2024 SEMA Show, which is held each November at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Both vehicles will be displayed at the African American Automotive Association’s booth (#27753 in Central Hall). This opportunity marks a significant step in showcasing young talent from underrepresented communities on one of the largest stages in the automotive world.
Christoper Harris, Founder of the AAAA, emphasized the importance of creating visibility and opportunity for youth in the industry:
“Showing students the opportunities of the mobility industry while allowing them the freedom of expression via design is so important. This is how we get kids excited about our industry, especially when they get to see their works displayed at a prestigious event such as the SEMA Show.”
Kellie Crawford, Founder of Taste of Tech, highlighted the event's broader mission:
“Creating new experiences in and around the automotive industry that combine design and tech is central to our mission. By reimagining how we introduce students to transportation design, we aim to change perceptions and usher in a new generation of innovative thinkers poised to transform the automotive industry.”
This event was created to inspire and empower students, presenting them with opportunities in the mobility industry while providing the freedom to apply their unique perspectives. The event’s focus on allowing students to express their individual styles in automotive design is not just an educational exercise—it’s a crucial step in redefining and diversifying the mobility industry.
By placing these student-designed vehicles at the 2024 SEMA Show, Taste of Tech and the AAAA are making a bold statement, “The future of mobility will be shaped by fresh, diverse voices.” This event is not about showcasing cars; it's about showcasing the potential of the next generation of innovators and changing the narrative of who belongs in the world of automotive design. fresh, diverse voices.” This event is not about showcasing cars; it's about showcasing the potential of the next generation of innovators and changing the narrative of who belongs in the world of automotive design.
